What to Do When You Lose Traveler’s Checks

When you lose traveler’s checks, it is important to immediately file a police report, as some financial institutions will not issue refunds or a replacement until that is done. Once that is complete, call the 24 hour hotline number given to you by the company that issued the checks. You will need to have the original serial numbers of the checks that were stolen, along with the date and location of purchase. Once this process is complete, refunds or replacements can be issued in as little as 24 hours.

Do All Traveler’s Checks Work the Same?

All traveler’s checks work the same, regardless of which institution they were originally issued from. Traveler’s checks can be purchased from many financial institutions such American Express, Visa, or your local bank, and they are used in the same way as cash. Traveler’s checks are available in several different denominations and, once spent, any refund due is returned to the consumer in local currency. Unlike cash, if lost or stolen, traveler’s checks will be replaced or refunded.
