Aromatherapy Scents and Meanings


Essential oils may not cure health problems, but some claim that they are very effective for various symptoms and ailments. Every essential oil can contain hundreds of components of other oils. Each mixture of oils can have an effect on a specific area of your body, or mind. Here are a few sample ailments that specific essential oils may be able to ease.

Anti-inflammatory: Anything containing a lemon like smell such as lemon grass, citronella, or eucalyptus may be helpful as an anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, or sedative.

Anger Management: Anger can be calmed with the use of rose, jasmine, rosemary, chamomile, or marjoram.

Immune System: Oregano, clove, cinnamon and thyme can help with strengthening the immune system and exerting a warming sensation.

Panic: Panic can be calmed by using juniper, lavender, chamomile and geranium.

Wound Healing: Camphor, sage, rosemary and eucalyptus may be used to aid in the healing of wounds, easing mucous secretion and stimulating new cell growth.

Stress Relief: Stress can be alleviated by inhaling scents like citrus, frankincense, lavender, sandalwood and rosemary.

An interesting study conducted by a Japanese fragrance company studied the effects of different aromas. Keyboard operators typed various words while many different fragrances were infused into the air. The results showed that while exposed to lavender scent, the error level dropped 20%. Jasmine had an effect of a 33% decline in errors, while exposure to lemon aroma showed a 54% drop in mistakes.

Lavender has been shown to increase alpha waves, which affects relaxation while jasmine can give the effect of a more alert mental state by increasing beta waves. Lemon can also offer a calming effect which may have helped the keyboardists that were studied to relax and focus on their typing, causing them to make less mistakes.
