Aromatherapists stand by the use of certain essential oils in the treatment of depression. Essential oils can be diluted with a carrier oil and applied directly to the skin, used to scent bath water, warmed to scent a room, or dabbed on clothing to allow for long-term inhalation. Aromatherapists recommend the use of specific oils in the treatment of emotional and anxiety disorders such as depression, believing that these oils can help you break free of the depressive cycle and give you the energy to do something about your depression.
Essential Oils that Help Depression
Rose oil, lavender oil, and Neroli oil are the most potent, making them the most effective in the treatment of depression. However, there are other oils, which may also help alleviate the symptoms of depression. Among these are Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Mimosa, Myrrh, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Violet, and Ylang-Ylang.
How Aromatherapy Works
Aromatherapy is believed to clear your head, increase your mental alertness, reduce tension, reduce anxiety, and as a result can provide significant improvement in your depression. Some essential oils used to treat depression mimic certain neurotransmitters in your brain and have a powerful potential to alter your mood. When properly combined, essential oils have the ability to alleviate your depression symptoms and replace your sadness with a feeling of euphoria.
Is Aromatherapy Right for You?
Aromatherapy is not for everyone. If you are suffering from depression, you should talk to your doctor about treatment. If you are experiencing slight or moderate depression, aromatherapy may be the best treatment for you. However, if you are suffering from severe or chronic depression, it may be necessary to take an antidepressant in addition to using aromatherapy, so be sure to consult your doctor. Talk to your doctor to be sure you are a good candidate for aromatherapy.
