Can Endometriosis Cause Abdominal Bloating?
Endometriosis CAN cause bloating.
According to a study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Canada, abdominal bloating is an often overlooked symptom of endometriosis. The study set out to explore the relationship between abdominal bloating and an endometriosis diagnosis and concluded that 96% of study participants suffering from endometriosis experienced abdominal bloating to some degree. All women, both healthy and those suffering from endometriosis experienced abdominal bloating at some point during their menstrual cycle, but those suffering from endometriosis reported it to a greater severity. Women receiving hormonal treatments for their endometriosis seemed to have the highest severity of reported abdominal bloating with pain.
Additional Symptoms of Endometriosis
In addition to abdominal bloating, endometriosis can cause painful intercourse, gastrointestinal discomfort, and debilitating menstrual cramps. According to Harvard Health Publications from Harvard Medical School, women with endometriosis have an increased risk of developing fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, hypothyroidism, and have an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.
