Can Endometriosis Cause Weight Gain?
Endometriosis does NOT cause weight gain.
Though weight gain is not a symptom of endometriosis, it is a side effect of several of the hormone treatments used in the treatment of endometriosis including oral contraceptives, progesterone or progesterin, and Danocrine. Hormone treatments are given to patients with endometriosis in an attempt to decrease the endometrium's ability to grow by producing chronic anovulation, a pseudo-pregnancy, or pseudomenopause.
What Is the Endometrium?
The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. Endometriosis occurs when the cells associated with this lining begin to grow outside of the uterus such as on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and even the bowels.
What Is Anovulation?
Anovulation is an ovulation disorder in which an egg is not released during the monthly menstrual cycle.
What Is a Pseudo-Pregnancy?
A pseudo-pregnancy, or false pregnancy, is a condition that mimics a pregnancy in signs and symptoms without the presence of an embryo.
What Is Pseudomenopause?
Pseudomenopause is a condition that mimics menopause but rather than a natural progression of the body's aging process is coerced through hormonal intervention.
