Endometriosis does not cause weight loss but could be a result of its symptoms.
More Info: Weight loss is not a symptom of endometriosis, but it may be a result of the other symptoms. Endometriosis is an extremely painful condition. Many women suffer chronic pelvic pain, endure discomfort during and after sex and have disabling menstrual cramps. Resulting weight loss would not be extraordinary given the pain. Women may not feel much like eating as their period approaches, so some weight loss may occur.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a reproductive disorder that affects over five million women in the United States. It causes scarring and can lead to infertility. Women who deal with this condition usually start their period at a young age, and endure painful menstruation throughout their lives. The nature of the disorder means periods last longer than usual, and are accompanied by cramping a week or two before the cycle begins. Weight loss is not a significant factor in endometriosis, but it can play a role in controlling the illness.
When a woman has endometriosis, the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of the womb. It often attaches to other organs. The migration of cells leads to abdominal pain, bleeding and infertility issues. Pain may radiate to the back, as well.
Weight Loss Encouraged in Endometriosis Patients
Women with endometriosis are encouraged to maintain low body fat. For this reason, weight loss may be part of the treatment protocol. The release of estrogen triggers the thickening of the uterine wall. Lower body fat reduces the amount of estrogen the body produces.
It is more likely that a woman will feel fat when she has endometriosis due to bloating. In addition, weight gain may occur during treatment. Doctors will prescribe progestins in an attempt to shrink the endometrial implants that attach to organs outside the uterus. Weight gain is common with progestin therapy.
