Laminate flooring cannot be refinished.
More Info: Unlike solid wood floors that can be refinished, laminate flooring is composed of synthetic products topped with a layer that is imprinted with a simulated wood grain to give the illusion of wood. Attempting to refinish these floors would only serve to damage them further.
What is Laminate Flooring?
Traditional hardwood flooring options include solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood planks are made completely from pieces of real wood. Engineered hardwood is similar in that it is made of real wood on the top layers, while the underside is composed of a matrix of resin and sawdust. Laminate flooring, on the other hand is completely different in that it does not actually contain wood at all. Instead, laminate flooring is composed of synthetic products topped with a layer that is imprinted with a simulated wood grain to give the illusion of wood.
Why Would Someone Choose Laminate Flooring?
The most important reason for choosing laminate flooring over real wood is its low price point. On average, you can save more than 25% of your construction costs by choosing laminate floors over solid or engineered hardwood flooring. Next, laminate flooring is extremely durable and easy to maintain. It resists impacts and scratching much better than hardwood floors and requires only an occasional mopping to retain its beauty.
Can Laminate Flooring Be Refinished?
Although laminate flooring is much more durable than flooring made from real wood, under the wrong conditions or in areas of extremely heavy traffic, the finish of the laminate flooring can become damaged after several years. Unlike solid and engineered hardwood flooring, which can be sanded and refinished, laminate flooring cannot be restored. This is due to the manufacturing process and the construction of the laminate planks themselves. Attempting to sand and refinish laminate floors would actually destroy them even more. Instead, when laminate flooring is excessively damaged, it needs to be completely replaced.
