Can Milk Cause Acne?

Some studies suggest that milk does cause acne.

More Info: A variety of studies indicate that milk may be a contributor to the incidence of acne for some.  One study published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology links the presence of hormones and bioactive molecules in the milk to the acne outbreaks.  Another concluded that it is the whey protein-based insulinotropic mechanisms of milk that are to blame.

What Are the Health Benefits of Milk?

Milk contains a eight vitamins and minerals, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, niacin and vitamins A, D, B2, and B12, as well as a good source of protein. Skim milk retains these benefits without the fat contained in whole milk. Drinking milk after exercise leads to additional loss of body fat, and some studies show that milk may reduce the risk of heart disease.

How Much Milk Should I Consume Each Day?

Three to four cups of milk should be consumed per day to assure bone health. This ensures an adequate intake of calcium, which aids in the growth and maintenance of healthy bones. Research has also indicated that regularly consuming milk and other calcium containing products can lower blood pressure, lessen the risk of developing cancer, and help a person maintain a healthy weight. Adults between the ages of 18 and 50 should aim for three cups of milk or milk-based foods per day, while older adults and pregnant women should consume at least four cups of milk or milk-based foods per day.
