Low Potassium May Cause High Blood Pressure

Diets that are high in sodium and low in potassium may actually contribute to high blood pressure.  This would then explain why increasing your potassium intake could help to resolve the issue.

Dietary Potassium Just as Good

A 2005 study published in the journal Hypertension, compared the blood pressure lowering effects of potassium chloride-potassium available in a supplement, with potassium citrate-potassium naturally available in foods.  The study concluded that increasing the potassium citrate was just as effective at lowering blood pressure suggesting that those that suffer from high blood pressure simply add more potassium rich food to their diets.  Diets rich in potassium would include bananas, oranges, green leafy vegetables, fish, poultry, yogurt, melons, legumes, tomatoes, and whole-grain cereals.
