Most ulcers are caused by an infection of a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This bacterium can get into the protective lining of the stomach and weaken it, making the stomach more vulnerable to gastric acid damage. Some ulcers are caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
The Spicy-Food Connection
In the past, people who had ulcers were advised not to eat spicy, acidic, or fatty foods. Scientists have since proven that foods do not cause ulcers. Whether patients should avoid spicy food depends on the person: Many patients are not affected by spicy food, but some do feel their symptoms are better if they avoid it. This is because spicy food can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can hurt the stomach lining, irritate the ulcer, and delay its healing.
What Does Get Rid of an Ulcer?
Today, bacterial ulcers are treated with antibiotics to kill the bacterium and medicine to reduce stomach acid to help relieve pain and promote healing. Ulcers caused by certain anti-inflammatory drugs are usually treated by switching the medication.
