More Info: The Varicella-zoster virus is responsible for both chickenpox and shingles. When first infected with the varicella-zoster virus the infected person will get the chicken pox. The virus will then remain in the body in a dormant state. Several factors can reawaken the virus such as a weakened immune system. When the virus reinfects a person for the second time, the infected person will come down with shingles. In those with severely weakened immune systems, the virus can spread from a skin rash to the eyes and even the internal organs. In rare cases, shingles complications can result in death.
