Can You Get Rid of Acne Scars?

ANSWER:

You CAN get rid of acne scars.

There are many highly effective professional methods available to get rid of acne scars.

Chemical Peels

Also know as chemabrasion, this process allows special chemicals to soak into the affected areas and carefully destroys the upper layers of skin. New healthy skin grows in to replace it. This process can cost about $750, takes an average of 40 minutes to an hour and is best for mild acne scarring. Redness and irritation can last for weeks.

Dermabrasion

In dermabrasion and microdermabrasion, a motorized tool is used to ‘sand’ away the upper layers of scarred and damaged skin. Prices run in the $1500 range. Its most effective on shallow or mild acne scarring. Redness from treatment may last a few weeks and some skin discoloration may occur.

Laser Resurfacing

This treatment, sometimes called laser peel or laser dermabrasion, utilizes a CO2 or a YAG laser to burn away damaged areas of skin with short bursts of controlled energy. It encourages regrowth of collagen and new skin. Its best for shallow scarring and can cost about $3000 per treatment. Redness and irritation at the site can last for weeks.

Injections

Collagen and saline injections and gelatin implants can be used to get rid of acne scars by lessening their appearance. These fillers are injected directly into the scar and work by leveling out the skin and restoring smoothness. Treatments cost about $100 and are most effective on mild or shallow scars. Collagen can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Subcision and Augmentation

In subcision, the scar is freed from the surrounding tissue and forms a small blood clot. This clot helps form new connective tissue and raises the scar even with surrounding skin. Augmentation uses collagen to do the same. These are most effective on deep, severe acne scars and can cost $300 to $700.

Punch Techniques

This specialized technique involves punching out the pitted scar tissue and replacing it with a small skin graft. It works best for very deep scars, costs about $50 per punch and can take several weeks to heal.

Other Factors to Consider

Work with your doctor to determine the best way to treat your particular acne scars. Research each option to understand possible risks and side effects before you decide.
