The best way to remove carpet stains depends on the type of stain and carpet that's involved. Despite requiring different removal solutions, all stains require immediate action. Using readily available household products may help avoid permanent carpet damage.

Basic Procedure

No matter what type of solution you use, there's a basic procedure to follow for removing stains.

1. Immediately absorb the spill by using a clean light-colored towel or paper towels to blot the spill, but don't rub or scrub it. Utilize a spoon to scrape off sticky substances, and vacuum any dry spills, such as food.
   
   
2. Pre-test the cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area, by applying and letting it stand for a few minutes, and then blotting it with a clean white towel. Don't use the solution if there's any color transference on the cloth.
   
   
3. Apply small amounts of the solution to the stained area, using a clean white towel. Avoid rubbing and scrubbing actions, and work from the outside edges to the center of the stain. Let the solution have time to work.
   
   
4. Blot with a clean towel.
   
   
5. Repeat the cleaning and blotting process until stain disappears.
   
   
6. After stain is gone, rinse the area thoroughly several times with warm water, using a mist spray bottle to avoid over-wetting, and blot or pat it dry after each rinsing. Try to avoid leaving any residues.

Stain Removal Solutions

There are numerous household products that can be used to remove stains. Here are recipes for a few of them:

Liquid dishwashing detergent - Add ¼ teaspoon of mild liquid dishwashing detergent per cup of tepid water, or a ½ teaspoon of mild liquid soap can be substituted ( never use laundry detergent, any automatic dishwashing detergent, or any stronger amounts)

Vinegar: Add 1 cup of white vinegar per 2 cups of warm water.

Ammonia: Add 1 tablespoon of household ammonia per cup of water. Use this solution very cautiously, and definitely pre-test it, as it can cause color changes.

Baking soda, corn starch, or corn meal left standing for 6 hours or longer helps remove greasy stains, as well as helps soak up liquid spills. They also help remove pet odors and urine stains. You will have to vacuum the carpet after using these ingredients.
