Why Is It Called a Dirty Martini?

A dirty martini is a classic martini that has a splash of juice from the olive garnish added. The addition of the murky olive juice gives the martini a cloudy appearance.

What’s In a Dirty Martini?

  • 1 part vodka/gin
  • Splash vermouth
  • Splash olive juice

How to Make a Dirty Martini

  • For best results chill vodka/gin, vermouth, olives, martini glass, and glass pitcher or stainless steel shaker.
  • Fill glass pitcher or shaker three-quarters with cracked ice.
  • Add a splash of vermouth. The less vermouth used, the dryer the martini. If you like your martini extra dry, add the vermouth, shake to coat the ice with it, then discard the vermouth.
  • Add vodka or gin. Gently stir or shake the liquid over the ice cubes. Shake does not mean vigorously but rather a gentle swirling action.
  • Strain liquid into chilled martini glass. Add a splash of the juice from olives. Garnish as desired.
