Does Cod Liver Oil Have Omega-3?
Cod liver oil does have omega-3.
Cod liver oil contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) while fish oil contains eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid both of which are omega-3 fatty acids. Because cod liver oil is often less expensive than fish oil, many wonder if one can be equally substituted for the other.
Though cod liver oil has been demonstrated in studies to lower triglyceride levels like fish oil, the two are not the same. Cod liver oil has additional vitamins such as A and D that when taken in excess can have serious side effects. If your doctor has recommended taking fish oil for the purpose of lowering triglycerides, you should not substitute cod liver oil without first consulting him.
