According to the National Sleep Foundation, two-thirds of American adults have difficulty sleepy, 23 percent of which have actually fallen asleep while driving. The effects of insomnia can affect the person physically and mentally in multiple ways.

Impact of Insomnia on the Body

The effects of insomnia are serious and can lead to overall changes in the body’s ability to perform. If you are suffering from insomnia, you will find day-to-day activities challenging due to extreme body fatigue. Reduced energy levels will make it difficult for you to remain productive throughout the day. Your response time can also be affected by insomnia. Frequent headaches often accompany the chronic condition as well, and they are often triggered by sudden noises.

Effects of Insomnia on Mental Processes

If you suffer from insomnia, you could begin to experience hallucinations. Irritability and mood changes are also common symptoms of insomnia. Difficulty concentrating is another symptom you may experience with this condition. Sleeplessness can also cause you to become disoriented. Processes like learning new things may become challenging to you when suffering from this condition. Impaired memory and poor decision-making also accompany the sleep disorder.

Long-Term Effects of Insomnia

An interesting study following more than 700 men for fourteen years found that for those that suffered from chronic insomnia, insomnia that lasted more than one year as defined by the researchers, they had a four times higher early mortality rate. Another study found that the participants who slept fewer than five hours per night have a three times higher risk of developing a mental illness than those who sleep eight.
