Scars develop in the skin due to long periods of inflammation, or the overproduction of things like collagen and fibroblasts within the body. Exceptional scars are often caused by exceptional damage; generally the larger the damage, the more intense the scar.
The Skin’s Healing Process
After an injury or some other damage to the skin, especially the lowest layer known as the dermis, scarring occurs as part of your body’s natural healing process. Depending on factors like age, skin tone, overall health, and the location of the injury, the scar can vary in appearance. Your body uses things like collagen fibers and fibroblasts to repair damaged skin, and when produced in excess a scar can appear darker or more defined than usual.
Minimizing Scar’s Appearance
Many scars fade, some as quickly as a few days after injury. Most scars, however, tend to be longer lasting. The appearance of scars can be minimized by processes such as dermabrasion or laser surgery, but at present there are no methods that totally erase scars from the body. As scars are sometimes considered as unpleasant to the eye, proper safety and attention whenever a wound is in the process of healing is the best method you have to minimize the chance of lasting scars occurring on your body.
