How Do They Make Foods Fat Free?

In simple terms foods are made fat free by physically removing the fat content.

More Info: The act of removing fat from a food product varies depending on the food.  Foods are made fat free by the act of removing, specially processing, altering, formulating, or reformulating a food to remove the fat content.

Nutrient Content Labels

The United States Food and Drug Administration is responsible for ensuring that all foods that are sold in the US are safe, wholesome, and labeled correctly.  It is unlawful for a company to make claims on a food label that are false and misleading and has implemented the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA), which specifically outlines nutrient terms and content requirements. For example for a label to carry the term ‘high in' on the label, the product must contain more than 20% of the daily value of the nutrient.

Rules Governing Fat Free Labels

For a product to claim that it is fat free it must contain less than a negligible amount of the nutrient claimed in relation to similar products. A product that is naturally fat free cannot bear this on the label unless it clearly indicates that it meets this definition without special processing, alteration, formulation, or reformulation.

Content Claims Synonyms

The FDA allows for some latitude in packaging when it comes to label wording. Here are a few synonyms that are allowed to mean the same thing.

Free: Zero, no, without, trivial source of, negligible source of, dietarily insignificant source of.

Low: Little, few, contains a small amount of, low source of.

Reduced: Less, lower, fewer,
