An egg is viable for 12-24 hours after ovulation.

More Info: Conception must occur within the 12-24 hour time period or the egg will die, and a menstrual cycle will begin approximately two weeks after. Because every woman is different, it is often hard to predict exactly when ovulation might occur. It is good to note, that a male sperm can live within the womb for up to five days and under the right conditions maybe more. So, if you were to have intercourse within a few days prior to ovulation, pregnancy can still occur even though you did not have intercourse on the exact day of ovulation.

If you are trying to conceive, there are great ovulation predictors that you can purchase in any drug store. It is a very simple test, similar to a pregnancy test, that can be done in the privacy of your home. Ovulation predictor tests are fairly accurate, and can aid you and your partner if you are trying to conceive.

If having a baby is your goal, you might want to consider taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you decide you want to conceive. Taking prenatal vitamins insures that your baby will get all the nourishment it needs to grow healthy and strong. It is never too early to do all you can for your new baby and yourself.
