How Long Does It Take for a Tattoo to Heal?

It takes between two to four weeks for a tattoo to heal depending on the area that has been tattooed.

More Info: Depth of the wound and area receiving the tattoo factor into healing time.  A tattoo is an open wound and the same care should be given to treat it as you would any wound.  Pay careful heed to the aftercare instructions and be sure to note any signs of infection or health changes.

As it begins to heal, avoid scratching or picking at it.  Cover your tattoo when exposed to sun and avoid chlorine and saltwater as well as hot tubs.

Expert Opinion

Quote: "Following the most rudimentary instructions (e.g., no swimming, no direct exposure to the sun, washing once per day with mild soap, and applying aloe or a salve to the skin three times per day) the tattoo will heal in most cases without complication."
