How to Clean a Dishwasher with Vinegar

Since most modern homes come equipped with dishwashers, it is important to know how to maintain them. The proper cleaning of the machine is essential. Routine cleaning can prevent future problems, especially if the appliance is used often. A thorough cleaning should be done once a month if the machine is used frequently. If there is a noticeable odor, it is time for cleaning.

Cleaning the Dishwasher Door

When it is time for that routine cleaning, you want to make sure it is done thoroughly. Use a small brush to clean around the door and the rubber seal. An old toothbrush will work well for this task. Make sure to use hot soapy water when cleaning. After using the brush, use a damp sponge to remove the grime that was loosened by the brush. You can also use a sponge to clean the outside door surface. Clean the inside of the door with a soft abrasive cleaner. Do not forget to clean the hinges as well.

Cleaning the Inside of the Dishwasher

Once the door has been cleaned, it is time to move on to the inside of the machine. Remove the rack and take a good look at the drain area. Use a cloth to wipe around it, looking for anything that can get caught in the drain. If any food is stuck to the sidewalls of the dishwasher, scrub them off. It is not necessary to use soap on the inside of the machine.

Clean the Dishwasher with Vinegar

This part of the cleaning process is very important. Use a cup that is dishwasher safe and fill it with white vinegar. Place this cup on the top rack. Make sure the machine is empty except for this cup. Start the dishwasher and allow it to run through the entire cycle. Stop the machine when it begins the drying cycle. The vinegar will help to remove grime and odors. This method dilutes the vinegar for the least wear on your dishwasher components.

Maintaining Cleanliness

After you have gone through the steps to clean the dishwasher, you can maintain the cleanliness by using baking soda. Simply sprinkle one cup of baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher and run it through a cycle. This will help to remove stains and will keep the machine clean until it is time for the next complete cleaning.
