How to Clean a Laptop Screen

The items required to effectively clean the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen of a personal laptop computer are deceptively simple. All that is truly needed is a lint-free or microfiber cloth dampened with a little water.

Commercial Cleaning Products

Commercial cleaning products such as Windex have ingredients that are far too abrasive for the delicate nature of an LCD screen surface. Even though there are a range of specialized cleaning solutions available for cleaning Plasma TV, desktop, and laptop computer screens, they are generally overkill for all but the most specialized of laboratory and work environments. Since laptop screens are sensitive to pressure, it is also important when cleaning to apply only gentle pressure.

Microfiber Cloths

There are many different brands of microfiber cloths available such as 3M, Method, and Evercare. Since these products are often manufactured with specific end-product applications in mind, it is important to purchase those made specifically for home electronics and computer equipment. These are available at all major office supply and computer electronic chains such as Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, and The Shack.

Microfiber cloths are a synthetic based product made out of polyester, nylon or a polyester-nylon blend. In the case of cleaning a laptop computer screen, the qualities that come most into play are their softness and electrodynamics.

Microfiber Cloth Care

To get the longest life out of a microfiber cloth, it is best to have them dry cleaned rather than hand or machine-washed. For those who cannot afford the dry cleaning expense, hand and machine washing is an acceptable substitute, although this will lead to a shorter product life. In all circumstances however, it is advisable to never put microfiber cloths in the dryer.
