How to Treat Cystic Acne at Home

Because many prescription cystic acne treatments have undesirable and quite serious side effects, patients often ask about home remedies for cystic acne. While severe cystic acne may require stronger medications, there are several effective ways to naturally prevent and treat cystic acne.

Prevent Instead of Treat

The easiest way to avoid harsh prescription treatments is to prevent the blocked pores that cause outbreaks in the first place. The first step is to clean your face twice daily with mild cleanser that doesn’t dry or irritate your skin. Always remove makeup before going to bed. After cleansing, apply a light noncomedogenic moisturizer. Regular exfoliation can also reduce the buildup of dead skin cells that contribute to the blocked pores that cause acne. Men should avoid shaving as much as possible to limit skin irritation. Don’t use heavy products in your hair that might block your pores, and try to keep your hair off your face as much as possible. Try not to touch your face with your hands. Touching your face only introduces bacteria to the skin’s surface. If you already have an outbreak, avoid scratching and picking to prevent the spread of the outbreak.

Natural Treatments

Sun Exposure: A short period of sun exposure has been shown to help improve cystic acne, but it is not generally recommended because of the increased risk of skin cancer.

Fruits and Vegetables: Salicylic acid is used in prepared treatments, but it can also be found in many fruits and vegetables.

Homemade Face Mask: You can try a face mask of mashed mushrooms and radishes to apply the acid directly to your face without any other chemical additives.

Tea Tree Oil: Prepared over-the-counter balms containing tree oil can be effective. Try to find one with at least five percent tree oil. Be warned that tree oil can cause skin irritation in some poeple.

Vitamins: Vitamin A and zinc have both been shown to be effective in the prevention and treatment of acne. Vitamin A can be found in many foods, including spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, beef, chicken and milk. Zinc can be found in oysters, crab, yogurt, and raisins, as well as many other foods. Both vitamin A and zinc can also taken as supplements.

Brewer’s Yeast: Guggal and brewer’s yeast taken in supplemental form have also been shown to be effective in combating cystic acne.
