A clogged bathroom sink drain is a common occurrence that most homeowners will have to deal with at some point in time. You can unclog most bathroom sink blockages yourself with a little bit of time and elbow grease. Before you begin, you will need to gather a few basic supplies and be prepared to get messy.
Plungers use suction to loosen blockages in various types of drains. The best type of plunger to use for a clogged bathroom sink drain is a cup plunger. First, use a bucket to remove any water from the sink. Next, use as much force as you can to burp the plunger. Then, apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the rim of the plunger. Get as good a seal around the drain opening as possible. Now you are ready to plunge. Use an up and down motion while plunging. It may take a few minutes of plunging to unclog the drain.
If plunging does not unclog your bathroom sink’s drain, you may need to use chemicals to break up and loosen the clog. Do not use drain cleaners at the same time as a plunger, as this could splash harsh chemicals right into your eyes, nose and mouth. If you prefer non-toxic chemicals, start by pouring 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain and wait for at least 30 minutes. Then, flush the drain with 6 cups or more of boiling water. If the drain is still not clear, you might wish to try commercial drain cleaners. These are available in environmentally friendly green cleaning product lines as well as traditional chemical drain cleaner products that use harsher chemicals and can be found at many stores.
