Is Laser Resurfacing Safe?

When performed by a trained professional laser resurfacing is safe.

More Info: According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, due to the nature of the surgery, you should be extremely selective in your provider choice.  The surgery itself requires precision and an artistic touch which is successfully accomplished by a trained surgeon with years of experience.

What Are the Side Effects of Laser Resurfacing?

The side effects of laser resurfacing are minimal, and they vary in severity from person to person. Common side effects include minor swelling and crusting of the skin that is laser-treated. The treated area may temporarily turn red or dark brown as well. During healing, some individuals may form small white bumps called milia on the skin surface. Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation of the laser-treated surface may also occur after this skin treatment. Some people may experience moderate pain or soreness after the procedure as well. Permanent scarring of the treated skin is possible; however, it is rare and generally insignificant.

What Is the Average Healing Time for Laser Resurfacing?

The average healing time for laser resurfacing is generally 10-21 days.  The healing time will depend on the depth of penetration by the laser beam and the size of the area being treated. A patient having just their cheeks resurfaced will recover much sooner than one who undergoes a resurfacing procedure involving the full face.

For several days after the surgery, the affected area will remain pink, swollen and tender. The patient will continue to notice redness of the treated area for several weeks after regrowth of the skin.

Expert Opinion

Quote: "Be sure to tell your plastic surgeon if you have ever had x-ray treatments of your facial skin such as those used in the treatment of acne or if you have had a prior chemical peeling procedure. Current or past use of AccutaneT, as well as Retin-A, and other topical skin preparations, must be reported to your surgeon. For your safety, it is important that you provide complete information. "
