Smelly Garbage Disposal Solutions

Author: Staff Writers

There are plenty of inexpensive garbage disposal odor removal solutions. You can either utilize a commercial cleaner, such as Disposer Care, or a homemade solution. Either way, removing the odors is as simple as using the garbage disposal itself.

Simple Homemade Odor Removal Solutions

Several homemade odor removal solutions involve using vinegar, baking soda, citrus fruits, ice, or a combination of these four ingredients. In-Sink-Erator, which is one of the major manufacturers of garbage disposals, recommends putting some baking soda in the disposal and grinding some type of citrus fruit for a few seconds without water. In-Sink-Erator does not recommend putting bleach down the disposal unit. They also suggest regular usage of the disposal, with a moderate stream of cold water following each use. Moreover, the company recommends grinding ice to keep the blades and disposal clean.

One popular method is to put ice cubes and a quartered lemon in the unit, and then run it without water for 10-15 seconds. Next, you leave the mixture sitting in the disposal for a half hour. Then you run the disposal, with plenty of cold water. Another version of this method is to simply grind citrus fruit peelings or rinds and then run cold water through the garbage disposal for 20 seconds. Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits all work very well. Yet another version substitutes lemon or orange juice for the citrus fruits.

Another popular method calls for a mixture of half a cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar being poured down the disposal and then letting it sit until the next time you use the unit. You can make vinegar ice cubes to use too. You make up a mixture of one cup vinegar and enough water to fill the ice tray, and then freeze it. When it becomes frozen cubes, put it in the disposer and flush it with cold water for one or two minutes.

Commercial Cleaners

If you don't mind using chemical cleaners, you can use products like Disposal Care. There are several commercial products easily available. Disposal Care starts out as a powder and then becomes a foam cleaner. Others start out as foam, some are liquids. For these, you'll have to follow the directions provided by the products' manufacturers.
