Stop Payment On Check

A stop payment order is a request to cancel a check that has been written but not yet deducted from the issuer's account.  The check becomes void for a specified length of time. Banks charge a fee for stop payment orders.

What Information Is Necessary to Stop Payment of a Check?

First, you will need to confirm that the check has not already been presented to the bank.  Once the bank accepts the check and transfers funds, you cannot stop payment.

Some banks may have slightly different policies on their stop payment procedures but most banks will require that you present them with the check number, the payee name, the exact amount, and the date written.  If any of the information is different, they may still honor the check when presented.  Many banks will also require that this oral request be followed by a written request.

How Does the Stop Payment Order Work?

According to the US Department of Treasury's Office of the Controller of Currency Administrator of National Banks, following a stop payment request, the bank is obligated to honor it as long as all procedures have been followed properly.  Most stop payment orders are valid for six months after which time they can be reinstated for another six months.  If a stop payment order is issued orally but not confirmed in writing, it lapses after 14 days.
