Tattoo Removal Methods

If you have regrets about a tattoo you got years ago, there are a few different tattoo removal methods to choose from to rid your skin of the injected ink. Tattoo removal creams, laser removal, and surgical removal of tattoos are the most effective forms of tattoo removal.

Tattoo Removal Creams

There are many tattoo removal creams to choose from that claim to fade out the tattoo ink in your skin. These tattoo removal creams are the cheapest choice when it comes to tattoo removal, however, they do take more time to produce the results that you are looking for. According to the Skin Health Association, these tattoo removal creams are good to use before trying other tattoo removal methods because they will fade the ink, making it easier to have the tattoo removed completely.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is the most effective way to get rid of an unwanted tattoo. The lasers break up the ink into tiny particles that will later be cleared by the body. Unfortunately, laser tattoo removal can be very costly, extremely painful, and can take many sessions to break up the tattoo ink completely. According to, tattoos with very dark ink or individuals with dark skin have proven to be more difficult to completely remove a tattoo. There is also a bigger chance of scarring and blistering with numerous laser treatment sessions.

Surgical Tattoo Removal

As a last resort, you can also have your tattoo surgically removed. There are three different surgical techniques used for tattoo removal: Cryosurgery, Dermabrasion and Excision. All three techniques involve some sort of surgical removal of the skin containing the tattoo. Cryosurgery freezes the area of the tattoo before removing the skin. Dermabrasion sands off the layers of the skin and can cost thousands of dollars. Excision is when the tattoo is literally cut out of your skin and sutured back together. Excision is guaranteed to leave scarring and may require skin grafts.

Before deciding on what tattoo removal option is the best option for you, be sure to set aside some time to consult with an expert who can answer all of your questions and concerns. There are a lot of things to take into consideration before making your decision.
