Vitamin D Causing Insomnia

In recent years, researchers have come to understand just how important Vitamin D is to the human body and how it has the capability of helping prevent major illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Studies have determined that the average white-skinned person needs the equivalent of twenty minutes of daily exposure to sunlight without wearing sunscreen. For those with darker complexions, up to an hour per day might be required for the body to convert the required daily amount of Vitamin D.

Nighttime Supplements

There are other ways of course to get Vitamin D into the body besides exposure to direct sunlight. However, for those who work indoors and rely on an unbalanced nutritional diet that fails to gather up the proper amount of Vitamin D and-or Vitamin D supplements, insomnia can be one of the resulting conditions.

The best quantification of the relationship between a lack of Vitamin D and insomnia comes from testimonials of those who have upped their daily intake, via supplements, and found a remarkable new ability sleep through the night.  Adults need a minimum of 600 International Units (IU) of Vitamin D per day.

Too Much D

Although it's rarely documented, there is also the possibility of someone suffering from insomnia because of taking too much Vitamin D. In one such case, a man reported taking large amounts of Vitamin D over a period of eight to nine months, along with his daughter, to combat sinus infections and the flu.

Although high doses of Vitamin D can help alleviate some sicknesses, these are meant to be taken only over a very short span of time such as two or three days. In the case of this particular father and daughter, a physician responding with advice was rather amazed that they had not had more severe side effects.

When all the current research is reviewed, it seems to point to the fact that while Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to insomnia, it is rarely the one and only cause. Typically, there are many other issues also at play.
