Acute sinusitis is a sudden onset of a sinus infection that lasts less than eight weeks or two months, while chronic sinusitis is a long-term sinus infection, which lasts more than eight weeks and is experienced at least four times in a given year.

Acute bacterial sinusitis is the result of a bacterial infection of the sinus cavities, while chronic sinusitis is a sinus infection that is frequent and lasts more than three months.

Sinus Infection Treatment

To alleviate the pain and discomfort that accompany sinus infections, decongestants are often prescribed in the form of nasal sprays, drops or pills. However, to treat the infection itself, antibiotics are prescribed. If the sinus infection is chronic, intensive antibiotic therapy is then required.
