Author: JM S Morales
Common symptoms experienced during the onset of a sinus infection are facial pain or pressure for ten to fourteen days, pain and pressure felt specifically in the eye, nose and cheek areas, occasional headaches are also experienced, the feeling and experience of a runny nose that secretes whitish or colored nasal discharge, feeling of stuffy nose and nasal congestion, hot breath and sometimes pain in the teeth.

Sinus Infection vs. Colds or Allergies

The above-mentioned symptoms of sinus infection are distinguished from those experienced during the onset of a common cold or an allergy attack. Common cold sufferers do not experience pain in the upper teeth, and it is marked occasionally by sneezing, coughing and nasal congestion. Meanwhile, allergy symptoms are marked by sneezing, coughing and nasal congestion with no pain experienced.

What Is a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection or sinusitis is basically an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. The two kinds of sinus infections are either acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis is a sudden onset of a sinus infection that lasts less than eight weeks or two months, while chronic sinusitis is a long-term sinus infection, which lasts more than eight weeks and is experienced at least four times in a given year.

Acute bacterial sinusitis is the result of a bacterial infection of the sinus cavities, while chronic sinusitis is a sinus infection that is frequent and lasts more than three months.

Sinus Infection Treatment

To alleviate the pain and discomfort that accompany sinus infections, decongestants are often prescribed in the form of nasal sprays, drops or pills. However, to treat the infection itself, antibiotics are prescribed. If the sinus infection is chronic, intensive antibiotic therapy is then required.
