What Is a National Letter of Intent?
If you are a student athlete candidate qualified to attend a college on a sports scholarship, then you will likely soon become familiar with the national letter of intent (NLI). A NLI is an agreement between the issuing institution (university making you an offer) and a student athlete and his parents that outlines the terms under which financial assistance will be given.
What Does the NLI Outline?
Under the agreement the prospective student athlete agrees to attend the university for one full year and participate in the agreed upon sport for that timeframe.
A prospective student athlete may only sign a NLI with one institution and may only sign one per year, which means that you may only sign for one sport. For example, if you are approached to sign a NLI for baseball then you may not sign one for soccer in that same year.
