Many people also include these abbreviations in their written communications or speech.

New Lingo or Old?

Many people think that texting abbreviations are a part of a completely new lingo. However, many of the abbreviations have been around for ages. All these forms of abbreviation have been in use in various languages for centuries. Apart from the medium, there are no real distinctions between modern and older abbreviations. Many of the older abbreviations became so familiar that they were considered to be new words. People complained the language was being ruined by abbreviations as far back as 1711. The inconsistency and use of non-standard spelling has been in use for at least since 1942, fifty years before texting was widely used. Logograms are symbols used in written language to represent an entire word or idea. Logograms were used in several ancient languages around the world.

The Importance of Texting Abbreviation Decoding

As aforementioned, texting abbreviations are rapidly becoming a part of daily living on all levels of society. They are being used in forms of communication for work, school, home, and other social interaction activities. Anyone who does not understand what the abbreviations mean cannot respond to these communications appropriately. In order for communication to be effective, both the sender and recipient must understand what is being said. Responding inappropriately to what is said can cause embarrassment or have more serious consequences.
